One always imagines a princess must travel in a horse-drawn carriage, and for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her new husband, HRH Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, that carriage is the very same open-top coach - known as the 1902 State Landau - in which his mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, travelled after her wedding to William’s father, HRH Prince Charles of Wales, in 1981.
On that day, the Lady Diana Spencer travelled to Westminster Abbey in the famous Royal Glass Coach. Alas, no Glass Coach for commoner Catherine. Instead, Catherine’s wedding transport was a car, albeit the Rolls Royce the Queen received as a gift to mark her Silver Jubilee. Travelling to the church in a car and in a carriage from the church apparently symbolised her transition from a commoner to a royal. The newly-weds were accompanied back to The Palace by riders and horses of the Household Cavalry.
