A wedding cake can cost as little as R1,200 or well over R20,000, and both prices are completely normal, because "wedding cake" describes wildly different objects. A single-tier semi-naked cake for 25 guests and a five-tier hand-piped fondant showpiece with sugar flowers for 200 are both wedding cakes. They're just not remotely the same job.

Most South African couples land somewhere in the middle: a two or three-tier cake, priced between R3,000 and R8,000, in a flavour and finish that suits the rest of the reception. Here's what actually moves that number up or down.

What actually drives the price of a wedding cake

Servings and tier count are the biggest factor, since more tiers mean more cake, more structural support, and more hours in the kitchen. After that, icing type matters a lot: a smooth buttercream or trendy semi-naked finish costs less than fondant, because fondant takes considerably longer to apply cleanly. Design complexity, hand-piped detail, sugar flowers, metallic leafing, a custom topper, adds cost on top of the base cake itself, sometimes more than the cake. Flavour and filling upgrades (salted caramel, fresh fruit compote, a liqueur-soaked sponge) usually carry a small premium over a standard vanilla or chocolate sponge. Finally, delivery, on-site setup, and cake stand hire are frequently quoted separately from the cake price, and couples who only budget the cake itself are often surprised by an extra R500 to R1,500 on the invoice.

Tiers & servings	Typical cost (ZAR)
Single tier, 20–30 servings	R1,200 – R2,500
Two tier, 40–60 servings	R2,500 – R5,000
Three tier, 60–100 servings	R4,000 – R8,000
Four tier, 100–150 servings	R6,500 – R12,000
Five-tier or elaborate showpiece, 150+ servings	R10,000 – R20,000+

Those ranges hold for a reasonably detailed cake in each size bracket. A very plain finish can come in below the low end, and a design-heavy cake with extensive sugar flowers or hand painting can push past the high end at any tier count.

Buttercream vs fondant vs semi-naked, why the finish changes the price

Buttercream and semi-naked finishes are the most affordable options and also the most fashionable right now, which works nicely together. Both rely on the cake's own shape and texture rather than a smooth fondant shell, so they take less time to finish and cost less as a result. Fondant delivers a completely smooth, almost sculptural surface, but getting that surface right is a slow, skilled process, and the price reflects the extra hours. Sugar flowers, hand-painted detail, and gold or silver leafing sit on top of whichever base finish you choose, and a heavily decorated cake can genuinely cost more in decoration than in cake.

Cupcake towers, dessert tables, and other alternatives

A traditional tiered cake isn't the only way to handle dessert, and the alternatives aren't automatically cheaper, but they can be, depending on how you build them. A cupcake tower for 80 guests, still with a small cutting cake on top for photos, typically runs R2,500 to R5,000, broadly in line with a modest tiered cake but with the practical bonus of guests serving themselves without a cake-cutting bottleneck at the reception. A full dessert table, mixing mini tarts, macarons, a few cupcakes, and a small centrepiece cake, tends to cost more overall than a single tiered cake once you add up every element, since you're effectively paying several dessert suppliers instead of one. Doughnut walls and croquembouche towers have become popular alternatives too, priced similarly to a mid-range tiered cake, R3,000 to R7,000 depending on quantity, and worth considering if your reception style leans more casual than formal.

Flavour, filling, and how far in advance to book

A standard vanilla or chocolate sponge with buttercream or fresh cream filling sits at the base price for any given size and tier count. Upgraded fillings, salted caramel, fresh berry compote, a liqueur-soaked layer, chocolate ganache, generally add a small premium per tier, usually R150 to R400 depending on the designer and the ingredient itself. Dietary variations matter too: gluten-free and vegan wedding cakes are widely available now, but expect a premium of 15–25% over a standard sponge, since both require different techniques and often pricier ingredients to get right. On timing, popular cake designers for peak-season Saturdays, particularly December and April, are often booked out six to twelve months ahead, so treat cake booking with the same urgency as booking your venue and photographer, not as something to sort out closer to the date.

The "kitchen cake" trick most couples don't know about

Ask any experienced cake designer about stretching a budget and most will mention the same trick: build a smaller, more elaborate display cake, one or two tiers, for photos and the cutting ceremony, and pair it with a plain, cheaper sheet cake in the same flavour, baked in the kitchen and sliced for guests who never see it. Nobody at the reception can tell the difference between a slice from the display cake and a slice from the kitchen cake. What they see is the tiered showpiece; what they eat, quietly, is the sheet cake underneath. It's one of the easiest savings in the whole wedding budget, and it barely shows.

Regional cost differences worth knowing

Cake pricing tracks the same regional pattern as the rest of a wedding budget. Cape Town and the Cape Winelands sit at the higher end for equivalent design complexity, driven by both higher demand and a concentration of design-focused cake studios used to working with high-end venues. Johannesburg and Pretoria offer more competitive pricing across a wide range of skill levels, from home-based bakers to established studios, which makes it easier to find a good match for a modest budget. Smaller centres and rural areas typically price lower still, though the trade-off is fewer specialist designers to choose from if you want an elaborate, design-heavy cake rather than a straightforward tiered bake.

Where cake fits into your overall budget

Cake is a small line item in the context of a full wedding, usually around 2% of the total spend, well behind venue, catering, and photography. That doesn't mean it's not worth planning properly. It just means it's rarely the category to agonise over if money is tight elsewhere. Our free wedding budget tracker is the easiest way to see cake cost in context against every other quote coming in, rather than judging it in isolation.

Questions to ask your cake designer before booking

Confirm whether a tasting session is included in the quote or charged separately, since some designers bundle it into the price and others treat it as an add-on. Ask whether delivery and on-site setup are part of the headline price or added afterwards, and whether a cake stand is provided or needs separate hire. Find out how far in advance you need to book, popular designers are often full a year out for peak wedding-season Saturdays, and what the deposit and cancellation terms look like. These are the same style of practical, contract-level questions worth asking any wedding supplier, not just a cake designer.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a wedding cake cost in South Africa?

Most wedding cakes cost between R1,500 and R20,000, with the majority of couples paying somewhere between R3,000 and R8,000 for a two or three-tier cake with a moderate level of detail.

How much is a 2-tier wedding cake?

A two-tier cake serving 40 to 60 guests typically costs R2,500 to R5,000, depending on the finish and how much decorative detail is involved.

How much is a 3-tier wedding cake?

A three-tier cake serving 60 to 100 guests generally falls between R4,000 and R8,000, with fondant and sugar-flower detail pushing toward the top of that range.

Is fondant more expensive than buttercream?

Yes. Fondant takes considerably more time and skill to apply smoothly than buttercream or a semi-naked finish, so it usually adds a noticeable premium over the same size and tier count in buttercream.

What is a "kitchen cake" and does it actually save money?

A kitchen cake is a plain, cheaper sheet cake baked in the same flavour as your display cake and served to guests instead of cutting into the tiered showpiece. It's a genuinely effective way to cut cost, since guests can't tell the difference on the plate.

Do wedding cake prices include delivery and setup?

Not always. Many designers quote the cake itself separately from delivery, on-site setup, and cake stand hire, so it's worth confirming exactly what's included before comparing quotes from different suppliers.
