Most South African couples spend between R12,000 and R40,000 on their two wedding rings in 2026. A plain 9ct gold band usually costs R4,000 to R12,000, an 18ct gold band R9,000 to R25,000, and platinum from around R12,000. Diamond-set and eternity bands start where plain bands stop, and a full eternity ring can pass R80,000. Tungsten and titanium bands, popular with grooms, come in under R5,000. What you pay depends mostly on the metal, the width and weight of the band, and whether there are stones in it.
This guide covers what wedding rings cost in South Africa for both partners, what you get at each price level, what pushes the price up, the small costs that come later, and how to spend less without buying a ring you'll want to replace in five years. Unlike almost everything else in the wedding budget, these are worn every day for decades, so durability matters as much as looks.

How much do wedding rings cost in South Africa?
Here's the short version, in 2026 rands, per ring. These are typical prices from South African jewellers for a band of average width in a standard size.
| Type of ring | Typical price per ring | What you're paying for |
|---|---|---|
| Tungsten, titanium or silver | R1,000 to R4,500 | A tough, affordable band, mostly in men's styles |
| Plain 9ct gold band | R4,000 to R12,000 | Real gold at the lower purity, hard-wearing and affordable |
| Plain 18ct gold band | R9,000 to R25,000 | Richer colour, more gold by weight, the classic choice |
| Plain platinum band | R12,000 to R40,000 | A dense, naturally white metal that never needs replating |
| Moissanite or lab-grown diamond band | R4,000 to R15,000 | Sparkle at a fraction of natural diamond prices |
| Natural diamond-set or half-eternity band | R12,000 to R40,000 | Small diamonds across part of the band |
| Full eternity band | R25,000 to R80,000+ | Diamonds all the way round, often in platinum or 18ct |
The sweet spot for most couples is a plain or lightly set 18ct gold band for the bride and a plain gold or platinum band for the groom, which puts the pair somewhere around R20,000 to R35,000. 18ct is soft enough to look rich and hard enough to last, and plain bands age beautifully. If money is tight, 9ct gold is a perfectly good everyday metal, and many couples choose it deliberately for its strength.
What you get at each price point
Under R8,000 per ring
This is tungsten, titanium, silver and slim 9ct gold bands, plus moissanite-set styles. Tungsten and titanium are extremely scratch-resistant, which is why they're popular with grooms who work with their hands. The trade-off is that most can't be resized, and tungsten can crack if dropped on tiles. Silver is the cheapest of all but scratches and tarnishes, so it's better as a placeholder or a travel ring than a forever ring.
R8,000 to R25,000 per ring
Most South African wedding bands sit here. You get solid 18ct gold or a wider 9ct band, a comfort-fit profile (rounded on the inside so it slides on easily), and often a choice of finishes like brushed, hammered or polished. A half-eternity band with small diamonds set across the top also fits in this range at many jewellers. Jewellers with their own workshops, like Cape Diamonds in Cape Town, can customise a women's band to sit perfectly against your engagement ring, which is worth asking about if your engagement ring has an unusual shape.
R25,000 and up per ring
This is platinum, heavy 18ct bands, full eternity rings and bespoke work. A bespoke band starts with a sketch or CAD drawing, then a wax model or 3D print, and is cast and finished by hand. You're paying for metal weight, the setter's time and the stones. Johannesburg jewellers like Prodiam take bespoke commissions alongside their diamond-set ranges, and a matching custom set for both partners is the most personal option at this level.

What pushes the price of a wedding ring up
The metal and the gold price
Gold rings are priced largely on weight, so the gold price matters. Gold has climbed sharply over the past two years, and South African jewellers have passed that on, which is why older price guides often look cheap. 18ct gold contains 75% pure gold, while 9ct contains 37.5%, so an 18ct band of the same size costs roughly twice as much. Platinum is denser than gold, which means a platinum band uses more metal by weight and usually costs more again.
Width and weight
A 6mm men's band uses roughly twice the metal of a 3mm women's band. Every extra millimetre adds to the price, and so does a heavier "court" profile compared with a light flat band. If you love a wide look but not the price, ask for a lighter weight in the same width.
Stones
Diamonds change the maths completely. A band with a few small diamonds set across the top costs a few thousand rand more than a plain one. A full eternity band with diamonds of good colour and clarity can cost more than the engagement ring. Moissanite and lab-grown diamonds give a similar look for much less.
Shaped and fitted bands
If your engagement ring has a low-set stone or a halo, a straight band may not sit flush against it. A curved or notched band made to fit costs more than a stock style, typically R2,000 to R6,000 extra, but is often the only way the two rings look right together.
Brand
An international luxury name carries a premium for the box and the brand. A good independent South African jeweller using the same metals can often make a comparable band for noticeably less.
The small costs that come later
- Engraving: usually R200 to R800 for a short inscription inside the band, more for handwriting or fingerprint engraving. Some jewellers include it.
- Resizing: R300 to R1,500 for a gold band, depending on how many sizes it moves. Eternity bands and tungsten often can't be resized at all.
- Rhodium plating: white gold is plated to look bright white and the plating wears off. Expect to replate every year or two, at a few hundred rand a time. Platinum doesn't need this.
- Insurance: add the rings to your household contents policy as specified items. It costs little and covers loss, which is the real risk.
- Cleaning and checks: many jewellers offer free cleaning and claw checks. Ask, especially for set bands.

Choosing a metal that lasts
The single best piece of advice is to match your wedding band's metal to your engagement ring. Different metals wear against each other at different rates, and a harder band can slowly grind down a softer engagement ring over the years. It also keeps the colour consistent.
Yellow and rose gold are warm and forgiving, and scratches simply soften into a patina. White gold looks like platinum for less, as long as you're happy to replate it. Platinum is the most durable precious metal, never changes colour and holds diamonds securely, which is why it costs more. For grooms, a brushed or matte finish hides daily scratches better than high polish. If you're still deciding on a style, our wedding ring showcase is a good source of ideas.
Wedding ring prices across South Africa
Gold and platinum are priced in dollars, so the metal itself costs much the same in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban. What changes is labour, overheads and the brand. Johannesburg has the biggest concentration of manufacturing jewellers, and buying directly from a workshop is often the cheapest way to get solid gold. Cape Town has a strong scene of independent designers, with prices at the top end pushed up a little by tourist demand. In Durban and smaller towns, a trusted local jeweller can be excellent value, though choice of stock is smaller and custom work may take longer.
You can browse every jeweller in our directory by region and send one brief to several at once.
When to buy, and how deposits work
Start shopping three to four months before the wedding. Stock bands in your size can be ready in a week or two, but most bands are made or sized to order, which takes four to eight weeks, and bespoke work takes longer. Leave time for one resize, since fingers swell in summer heat and shrink in winter.
Most jewellers ask for a 50% deposit on made-to-order rings, with the balance on collection. Get the metal purity, weight, stone details and engraving text in writing before you pay. If diamonds are set in the band, ask for the total carat weight and the quality grades, so you know what you're comparing.
How to spend less on wedding rings
- Choose 9ct for one or both bands. It's harder than 18ct, looks great in yellow gold, and costs about half as much.
- Go narrower. A 4mm band instead of 6mm saves real money on metal.
- Pick a half-eternity, not a full eternity. The stones you can't see on the underside are expensive and get scratched.
- Buy both rings from one jeweller. Many offer a better price on a matched pair.
- Consider moissanite or lab-grown stones for a set band. The look is close and the saving is large.
- Use family gold. Many jewellers will melt down an old ring or heirloom and recast it, saving on metal and adding meaning.
- Skip the luxury brand box. An independent jeweller using the same metal often costs much less.

Frequently asked questions
How much do wedding rings cost in South Africa?
Most couples spend R12,000 to R40,000 on a pair in 2026. Plain 9ct gold bands cost R4,000 to R12,000 each, 18ct gold R9,000 to R25,000, and platinum from around R12,000.
Is 9ct or 18ct gold better for a wedding ring?
18ct has a richer colour and more gold by weight. 9ct is harder, more scratch-resistant and about half the price. Both make good everyday wedding rings.
How much does a men's wedding band cost?
Tungsten and titanium bands cost R1,000 to R4,500. A plain gold men's band is usually R6,000 to R25,000 depending on width and purity, and platinum costs more.
Should my wedding band match my engagement ring?
Ideally, yes, in metal at least. Rings of different metals wear against each other unevenly, and matching keeps the colour consistent over time.
How long does it take to make a wedding ring?
Most made-to-order bands take four to eight weeks. Bespoke designs take longer, so start shopping three to four months before the wedding.
How much does it cost to engrave a wedding ring?
