The bride's dress gets most of the attention, but there's real etiquette, and real room to get it wrong, around what a groom, his groomsmen and male guests wear to a wedding. Formality is governed by the time of day, the season and the nature of the event, and knowing the difference between a morning suit and a tuxedo will save you from turning up looking either underdressed or bizarrely overdressed. Here's what you actually need to know.

The Basic Rule: Time of Day Decides Formality

Before choosing a specific style, understand the underlying logic. Daytime formalwear and evening formalwear are genuinely different categories, not just lighter and darker versions of the same thing, and mixing them up is one of the most common wedding menswear mistakes. As a rule of thumb, anything described as "morning wear" is a daytime style, while black tie and white tie are evening styles worn after 6pm. Once you know which category your wedding falls into, choosing the right suit becomes far simpler.

Morning Suit

A morning suit comprises a morning coat with tails, a waistcoat, and trousers, traditionally in grey, worn with either a turndown collar shirt for a more relaxed look or a wing-tip collar for something more formal, finished with a tie and sometimes a top hat. It's a popular choice for daytime weddings and reads as smart without tipping into evening formality. Morning suits are appropriate for grooms, groomsmen and guests alike, at any time of year, but only before 6pm; wearing one to an evening reception looks noticeably out of place.

Evening Suit (White Tie)

Contrary to what most people assume, white tie, not black tie, is the most formal menswear category that exists. An evening suit comprises a cutaway tailcoat, matching trousers, a white waistcoat, a white shirt with a wing-tip collar, a white bow tie, and typically a top hat. It's worn only after 6pm and only at genuinely formal evening weddings. After decades of being reserved for royalty, diplomats and the most traditional occasions, white tie has seen something of a resurgence at high-formality weddings, though it remains rare for the average South African wedding.

Tuxedo (Black Tie)

The tuxedo, also called black tie, is the most recognisable and widely worn formal evening option. Black or midnight blue, it comprises a single-breasted, tailless jacket, matching trousers, a white shirt and a black bow tie. It's appropriate for less formal evening weddings and remains the safest, most versatile choice for a groom who wants to look genuinely sharp without the full ceremony of white tie. Most South African formal evening weddings that specify "black tie" on the invitation are asking for exactly this.

White Dinner Jacket

A white or ivory dinner jacket paired with black trousers is a striking summer evening variation on the standard tuxedo, appropriate specifically after 6pm and generally reserved for warmer months. It's a bold choice that suits a confident groom but doesn't suit every setting; check with your venue and the overall tone of your wedding before committing, since it can read as either elegant or slightly costume-like depending on execution.

Lounge Suit

A simple two-piece suit, jacket and trousers, the lounge suit is the most versatile and commonly worn option for South African weddings today, particularly for daytime and less formal celebrations. It can be dressed up with a tie and pocket square or dressed down with an open collar and no tie at all, and it works equally well for the groom, groomsmen and guests at a casual to semi-formal wedding. If your invitation doesn't specify a strict dress code, a well-fitted lounge suit is almost always a safe and appropriate choice.

Nehru Suit

Originating in India and worn on formal occasions there, including weddings, the Nehru suit features a jacket with a mandarin collar and matching trousers. Its clean, collarless lines make it a distinctive, elegant choice that works well for weddings with a specific cultural connection, or simply for a groom who wants something visually different from a standard notch-lapel suit.

Choosing What's Right for Your Wedding

Work backward from your ceremony time and overall formality level rather than choosing a style first and forcing the wedding to match it. A daytime garden wedding calls for a lounge suit or morning suit, not a tuxedo. A formal evening reception at a wine estate suits a well-cut tuxedo. A relaxed beach or outdoor summer wedding might call for a lighter lounge suit in a lighter colour, or even a smart shirt and trousers combination without a jacket at all, depending on how casual the couple wants the day to feel.

Communicate the expected dress code clearly on the invitation so groomsmen and guests aren't left guessing. "Formal", "black tie", "smart casual" and "no dress code, come as you are" all mean genuinely different things, and vague wording is one of the most common sources of mismatched outfits on the day.

Buy or Rent?

Suit rental has become a genuinely practical option in South Africa, particularly for groomsmen who might only wear formalwear once every few years and don't want to own a suit they'll rarely reach for again. Renting also makes it easier to coordinate a matching look across a full groomsmen party without asking everyone to individually source and buy the same colour and cut.

Buying makes more sense for the groom, who is likely to wear his wedding suit again, at other formal events, and who benefits from a properly tailored fit that a rental simply can't always guarantee. If you do buy, budget for professional alterations regardless of how the suit fits off the rack; almost no suit fits perfectly without at least minor adjustments to the sleeves, trouser length and jacket through the shoulders.

Fabric and Season

South Africa's climate range matters more here than most menswear guides account for. A heavier wool suit that looks sharp at a winter wedding in Gauteng or the Karoo will be genuinely uncomfortable at a summer wedding in Durban or the Lowveld. Lighter wool blends, linen and linen-cotton mixes breathe far better in heat and humidity, and a lighter grey or tan suit reads appropriately for a summer daytime wedding without sacrificing formality.

For a winter evening wedding, particularly outdoors, factor in a proper overcoat for photos and any time spent outside the reception venue; temperatures drop sharply after sunset across most of the interior, and no amount of a sharp-looking suit will keep a groom or groomsmen comfortable standing outside for photos in June.

Finishing Details

The suit itself is only part of the look. Pay attention to:

Shirt collar and tie combination: match the formality of the collar (turndown vs wing-tip) to the overall formality of the suit
Shoes: polished leather in black or brown depending on the suit colour, never trainers or casual shoes with a formal suit
Pocket square and boutonnière: small details that visually tie the groom's look together with the wedding's colour scheme
Cufflinks: a nice touch of personalisation, and a genuinely popular gift from a bride to her groom or between groomsmen
Fit over trend: a well-fitted suit in a classic cut will always photograph better and age better in photos than an ill-fitting suit chasing a passing style

Coordinating the Groomsmen

A cohesive groomsmen look pulls a lot of visual weight in wedding photos, and it's worth planning deliberately rather than just telling everyone to "wear a dark suit." Decide whether you want an identical look across the whole party, matching suits, ties and shoes, or a more relaxed coordinated look, where everyone wears the same suit colour but with individual tie or shirt choices. The identical route photographs more formally and traditionally; the coordinated-but-varied route tends to suit more casual weddings and lets each groomsman feel a little more like himself.

Whichever approach you choose, communicate it early and specifically, ideally with a reference photo, since "navy suit" means different things to different people and shade mismatches show up clearly in group photos. If groomsmen are sourcing their own suits rather than renting as a group, give at least three months' notice so there's time for alterations before the big day.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Wearing black tie to a daytime wedding. It reads as though you misunderstood the invitation, however sharp the suit itself looks.
Ignoring the season. A heavy wool three-piece suit at a midday summer wedding in Durban is a genuinely miserable experience, and it shows in how uncomfortable you look in every photo.
Skipping alterations. An off-the-rack suit that hasn't been tailored to your shoulders and sleeve length looks noticeably less sharp than a modestly priced suit that has, regardless of the original price tag.
Mismatched shoe colour. Black shoes with a brown or tan suit, or vice versa, is a small detail that a surprising number of grooms overlook until they see the photos.
Leaving suit hire or purchase until the last month. Good rental stock and tailoring slots get booked up around peak wedding season, so start this process at least three to four months out.

The Bottom Line

Menswear for weddings has more genuine structure and etiquette than it gets credit for, but the underlying logic is simple once you know it: match the formality of your outfit to the time of day and the overall tone of the wedding, choose fabric appropriate to the season, and prioritise a proper fit over chasing a specific trend. Get those three things right and you'll look exactly as sharp as the occasion deserves.
